With the Northern Kingdoms in disarray after the assassination of many of their Monarchs, the Empire of Nilfgaard has invaded for a third time. Already, their forces have crossed the Yaruga and decimated Lyria and Rivia. Aedirn has capitulated. Sodden, Brugge and lower Temeria are in flames. Rather than commit his armies to the defense of the entire North, King Radovid of Redania crossed the Kestrel Mountains and attacked their neighbor Kaedwyn, starting the Winter War.

In most of the Northern Kingdoms hatred for elves runs rampant, only slightly less so than the overwhelming desire to burn mages at the stake in the name of the Eternal Fire. Elves have it better in Nilfgaard, but not much. No one has it much better. The society is hard and ruthless and their mages are kept under the yoke of the Emperor.

It is a time of suffering and strife. You have little control over who you are, but who you become... well, that's another matter. Now is not the time for heroes, but in this brutal landscape, what is truly needed are professionals.
